Who we are?
We are a regionally based oral history resource established since 1995. Living History North East is dedicated to recording Living Memories from across the northeast.

The role of Living History North East is varied.

We work with many other organisations and groups to help them record and document change.

What do we do?

Workshops and Training
LHNE have a number of courses. These include:

  • Training in interview techniques
  • The use of digital audio and video equipment.
  • Camera skills
  • Editing sound and vision on computers
  • Managing local oral history collections
  • Intergenerational and reminiscence workshops

Guidance, Advice, Information and Support
Do you want to know how to:

  • Start an oral history project?
  • What training to take?
  • What equipment to buy?

LHNE can help your community to achieve their goals.

LHNE have been supporting diverse groups and organisations throughout the region.

If you need any support or advice about training or planning an oral history project then give us a ring
on 0191 564 1535

Reminiscence Theatre
THAT WAS THEN, was a piece of reminiscence theatre, written by David Napthaine, and directed by Gez Casey presenting an interpretation of local memories from the Coronation year.

The Regional Database
Living History North East initiated in 2003 a Regional database of oral history. Any groups who are interested in letting LHNE know about their recordings and adding them onto the database are more than welcome. Contact the Community Archives Officer for more information

Partners and Project Development

Age Exchange
Living History North East are a partner in this exciting national project to record memories for those who were in the Merchant Navy during World War II. This provides great insight into the role of the Merchant Navy and ensures that the North East will find representation in a national oral history project.

Intergenerational Activities
With such projects as ‘The Home that won the war’, ‘It’s the way we tell it’, and ‘Cranes, boats and trains’, Living History North East are eager to engage young people of all ages with older volunteers in the recording of living memory. These projects provide access to the skills and expertise needed to create valuable resources.

FAVOH - Friends and Volunteers of Oral History
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer then contact Alison Gibson for more information.

Regional Developments
Living History North East is a member of The Regional Network. If you would like more information about the network then ring Janette Hilton. Or log onto www.oralhistorynorheast.info

Janette Hilton is also one of the two Regional Representatives for the National Oral History Network.

So if you want to let Janette know what is happening in your community- give her a ring and put the North East back on the map!!!
